History
Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG was started in 1919. The company was first founded by an engineer Anton Raky. Raky was a pioneer in modern drilling and oil drilling technology. The company's first name was Anton Raky, Tiefbohrungen in Salzgitter.
The cornerstone for SMAG was laid in 1937, when the Salzgitter Group bought a manufacturing facility for its constructing drilling machines. In 1986, the company purchased the grab product division from Peiner AG. Soon after, Peiner was developed into an international brand name in the succeeding years.
